In Naujoji Vilnia, an important public space – the square in front of the Naujoji Vilnia Culture Centre (Gerovės str. 1) – is to be renovated. Residents are invited to participate in meetings, submit ideas and agree on a vision for the square. Built in 1962, the Culture Centre building provides a number of important functions for the district, including cultural events, children’s groups and community meetings, as well as housing the Naujosios Vilnia Elderly Municipality and the library. The square next door is also a major attraction for various events, such as concerts, fairs, Užgavėnės (Mardi Gras) and other traditional festivities. However, the square, which was designed in the Soviet era according to the standards of the time, has nothing to offer for everyday leisure and remains an empty, transit space between events. The renovation aims, on the one hand, to maintain the square as a community gathering place, but at the same time to make it more welcoming and inviting for different groups of people to come and spend time there every day. Residents are invited to attend two meetings with the project promoters. Both meetings will take place at the Naujosios Vilnia Cultural Centre (Gerovės str. 1) and will last until 2 pm.
Update: Following a request from residents, the start of the meeting on 8 October has been postponed until 17:30.
The first meeting will take place on 8 October at 17.30 to explore ideas for renovation. The project team will invite you to go for a walk around the square and discuss the needs of residents and local organisations. In the two weeks following the first meeting, the design team will review and analyse all the ideas submitted, and if residents have any new suggestions, they can be submitted freely by email to dalyvavimas@idvilnius.lt until 22 October . The second meeting on 22 October at 6 pm will seek to find a common vision for the regeneration that satisfies all parties, once the ideas have come together. As the square is limited, it is unlikely that all the ideas will be able to be implemented, so the discussion will be aimed at prioritising and finding the best compromise. The meetings are open to all, and we kindly ask you to register to attend. Registration form: https://forms.office.com/e/1Tfsjm1QRq The proposals and needs agreed with residents will feed into the design brief. Based on the design brief, design proposals will be developed. The design proposals will also be presented to the public, followed by the building permit and preparation for the contracting works. The project is being prepared by ID Vilnius, Justė Sakalauskaitė, project manager, Linas Ūsas, architect. Analysis of the existing situation in the PRU
