Since the end of April, a value inventory and photogrammetric measurements of the wooden buildings of Šnipiškės have been underway. These measurements are needed to preserve the identity of the area, to restore the buildings and to apply for funding from heritage protection programmes. Owners of old buildings in Šnipiškės are invited to register – the measurements are free of charge for residents. “Wooden Šnipiškės is a unique place in Vilnius that we want to help preserve. And we have to do it without delay, because this district is changing rapidly,” said Živilė Ratavičiūtė, Chief Specialist of the Cultural Heritage Protection Division of Vilnius City Municipality. – It is also important to measure those wooden buildings that individually do not have a unique architectural value, because it is not the individual buildings that create the distinctiveness of this place, but the totality of wooden buildings.” Wooden buildings are preferred, but valuable stone buildings will also be measured. Residents of Šnipiškės are invited to register for the photogrammetric surveys, email.

The presence of residents is not necessary as only the exterior of the buildings will be recorded. The measurements are free of charge and the data will be made available to residents. “I really encourage residents to take advantage of this opportunity. Even if the owners do not plan to renovate their buildings in the near future, they will have to carry out the measurements themselves if necessary. In the meantime, the valuable features of wooden buildings may be lost,” says Ž. Ratavičiūtė. With the consent of the owners, ID Vilnius specialists take photographs of wooden and brick buildings with drones and carry out photogrammetric measurements of their exterior. The measurements are important for the preparation of building surveys and management projects, and they allow for easier, more efficient and less costly restoration of buildings or the reconstruction of what has been lost due to fire or other circumstances. Photogrammetric surveys of wooden buildings are carried out in order to implement the strategy for the conservation of the heritage of wooden architecture and to complement the collections of the Museum of Wooden City Architecture. The last value inventory of buildings in Šnipiškės was carried out twenty years ago. Since then, many changes have taken place in the area. The updated data will allow for a more precise identification of the valuable features of the cultural heritage site of Šnipiškės, known as Skansen or Šnipiškės Wooden Šnipiškės, and will allow for a clarification of the boundaries of the site.
