Reconstruction of Giedraičių Street: the main transport artery of Šnipiškės will be safer and more friendly for everyone

The reconstruction of Giedraičių Street, one of the most important thoroughfares of Šnipiškės district, completed this year, has made it safer and more friendly for everyone. The upgraded street is important not only for the residents of Giedraičiai and S. Fino Streets, but also for the nearby office workers. It is estimated that more than 4,000 vehicles use this street every day. Giedraičių Street, which is a two-way street for transit traffic and unsafe for pedestrians, has now been narrowed down to a one-way, one-lane street with separated cycle and pedestrian lanes. The reconstruction of the street, designed by the municipal company Vilniaus Plan, included a nearly 1 km stretch of the street from Lvovo Street to Žalgirio Street and a 200 metre stretch of S. Fino Street, from Giedraičių Street to Kalvarijų Street. In these sections, pavements were replaced, driveways and access to buildings were improved up to the spaces of private plots. The resurfacing of the street also included a new bicycle path and modern street lighting that meets modern requirements, as well as upgraded engineering networks. The removal of unauthorised fences on public land has widened the footpaths, which will allow pedestrians to travel unhindered to the city centre or to reach their homes safely. Small rest areas with benches and bicycle racks have been created next to the paths, and rubbish bins have been placed in the street. In order to preserve the historical atmosphere of Skansen in Giedraičių Street, some of the spaces along the street have been enclosed with new neat wooden fences (gates and gates have also been installed in response to the residents’ demand), and other open spaces have been supplemented with planting typical of the Šnipiškės quarter.
