In Šnipiškės, the comprehensively renovated S. Fino Street is returned to pedestrian and car traffic. Grinda has already restored the stone pavement in the carriageway and installed a storm water collection pipeline, in accordance with the project of Vilniaus planas. All pedestrian and cycling infrastructure works are scheduled to be completed by mid-November. “The Šnipiškės suburb is characterised by contrasts. There are glass-walled multi-storey buildings and wooden shacks with shutters. I think it is very important to emphasise this unique identity of Šnipiškės, while at the same time adapting modern solutions and creating better conditions for those who work and live here,” said Vytautas Mitalas, Deputy Mayor of Vilnius City. The 197-metre-long field stone pavement that was historically present on the carriageway of S. Fino Street has been restored, and additional entrances to the courtyards and side streets connecting Kaltanėnų and Saracėnų have been created. In order to achieve an authentic look, the Grindos specialists opted for a method that requires a great deal of patience and precision – laying the stones one by one by hand. This type of cobbled street not only looks aesthetically pleasing, but is also more durable and requires less maintenance. Nowadays, the wooden buildings from the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries are definitely worth a visit. The street is named after Samuel Finn, a prominent Jewish historian and promoter of the Hebrew language, for good reason – Šnipiškės was a suburb populated by many Jews, and the names of famous educators, industrialists, and artists have remained in its history. A few months ago, Grinda completed another reconstruction in Šnipiškės planned by the Vilnius Plan – Giedraičių Street, on which the improved S. Fino Street is based.
