Did you know that when the Fairytale Park opened in 1987, it had a wooden castle? You can see fragments of it in the archive film “Fairytale Feast” by director V. Blinstrub. This film, found in the archives and digitised, is part of the results of an analysis of the current situation of the Fairy Tale Park. The full analysis of the Fairytale Park can be found here. The analysis of the current situation of Fairytale Park was carried out in May-October 2023 by SĮ “Vilniaus miesto parkai” together with UAB “Vilniaus planas”. The analysis aimed to find out the history of the park’s establishment and how the park is used by the citizens today. In order to achieve these objectives, various tools were used, including:
- walks in the park with visitors to the site in June and July 2023;
- Conversations with Aušra Jasiukevičiūtė, sculptor and former Chair of the Sculptors’ Section of the Lithuanian Artists’ Union, and the Lithuanian Folk Art Union;
- Search the Fairytale Park archives;
- Online population survey (516 respondents);
- Inventory of sculptures in the park;
- Analysis of the Park’s strengths, weaknesses, threats and opportunities.
Talking to visitors and looking at the data collected, the authors noticed that Fairytale Park is full of stories told by the people who visit the park, the wooden sculptures of fairytale characters and their authors, and the nature here. Therefore, the results of the analysis are organised into three thematic parts – the park’s stories in nature, in art and in people.
The analysis of the park is part of the ongoing feasibility study for the Fairytale Park. “The feasibility study being prepared by Vilnius City Parks should provide a possible scenario for the renovation and maintenance of Fairy Tale Park. The feasibility study is based on the recommendations of landscape architects, foresters, sculptors and other specialists, as well as on the needs, experiences and visiting habits of park visitors. Following an analysis of the current situation, a workshop was held on 5 October 2023 in the Karoliniškės district near the Fairy Tale Park. During the workshop, Vilnius City Municipality and Vilnius City Parks specialists, together with citizens, discussed the results of the analysis, the preservation of the existing sculptures, the possible functional zones of the park, transit spaces and other problems and opportunities. The results of the workshop will be shared publicly in the news section of Vilnius City Municipality.
