Building permit issued for a new public space in Naujininkai

In Naujininkai, a new 1.2 ha public space will be landscaped and opened to the public on Tūkstantmečio and Darius and Girėnas streets. ID Vilnius is designing a promenade, observation paths, playgrounds and active sports areas, and a territory for community gardens. A building permit has already been issued for this project, and a tender for the contract will be launched soon. The landscaping work is expected to be completed by mid-2026. The public space is to be designed on vacant public land, interspersed with residential buildings, a school, a private commercial plot and garage buildings. The railway is nearby. The area is rather neglected and some of the inhabitants have already started gardening themselves. “The idea of cleaning up the area has been around for a long time. We organised meetings with the residents and asked their opinion. We want the place to be attractive and to be a place where people with different needs can spend their leisure time,” said Akvilė Myško-Žvinienė, Head of the Landscape Architecture Section of Vilnius City Municipality.

The area will be divided into distinct zones: a quiet recreation area with benches, gazebos, a number of walking paths, a promenade, an active leisure area with a children’s playground and sports facilities. The public space will also be adapted for people with special needs. The area will be safe and secure, with lighting and CCTV cameras. The area will include a vegetable garden, composting area, gazebo, water column. “This is the first public space in Vilnius where we have dedicated space for local and community gardens. We hope that this will not only encourage community spirit, but also promote urban gardens in Vilnius,” says A. Myško-Žvinienė.

Vilnius City Municipality has prepared a gardening guide for residents to help them set up their own garden near their home. Currently, the area is overgrown with self-sown thickets, invasive maple trees, white-flowered robinia, fruit trees, lime trees, sycamore trees, alder trees. Pruning, removal of damaged and dead trees and shrubs is planned. The design and installation of the public space will be financed by Vilnius City Municipality. European Union funding is also expected to cover part of the contracting work. See this map for all planned new and managed green spaces .
